The emotional, aural, intellectual, and physical must work in a cooperative way for the pianist to feel at one with both the music and instrument.

"Although I have had excellent teachers in the past, studying with Cameron has been a revelation in more ways than one ... as a result of his teaching, my playing has appreciably improved in just a few months."
- Claire Kim, Associate Professor, UC Irvine

"Their jaws almost hit the floor when my daughter sat down and began to play..."
- Joyce Chan, mother of Natalie, 9

Teaching from my studio in Los Angeles and Irvine, California, I welcome students of all ages and levels from throughout southern California.

Philosophy

To paraphrase a renowned pedagogue of the past, "the subject I teach is not the music, but the student." Indeed, while music-making is at the heart of the lesson, the individual needs of each student I teach - whether a five-year old beginner, an adult returning to the instrument, or budding artist - is the chief concern for me as an instructor. No matter the student's background, age, or musical interest - classical, popular, performing, composition, sight-reading, technique etc - I want to give him the tools ultimately to be an independent and confident musician, one who can pick up a score, think critically about it, and make great music even at the first sitting.

Of course, enjoyment, music appreciation, and having fun are also part of the program!

A Wholistic Approach

It is an unfortunate truth that most teachers often take an approach that does not account for the myriad elements that go into the making of a competent pianist. Unlike learning something academic, learning to play the piano well requires, more than analytical ability, the ability to integrate so many apsects of ourselves. The emotional, aural, intellectual, and physical must work in a cooperative way for the pianist to feel at one with both the music and instrument. I dare say that wholism in piano playing is so important that, it is impossible to be really good at one skill without the cooperation of the others - that a good sight reader is one who knows how to listen for a melodic line, the cooperation of the fingers, hands, arms, and body is connected to the emotionalism of the music, that physical and rhythmic momentum is symbiotic, etc. My teaching, therefore, is entrenched in a concern for not only building the tools for necessary for good playing, but their integration.
